The Mahowald-Mead Prize (MMP) recognizes outstanding research in neuromorphic engineering, worldwide. The Prize is named for the late Misha Mahowald and Carver Mead, the most influential pioneers of the field of neuromorphic engineering. The award is considered annually.
The Mahowald Early Career Award (MECA) has been established for individual Master's, PhD, and early postdoctoral students. It is open for submissions year-round, and evaluated once per year.
Individuals or groups are invited to submit a description of their work, or nominate the work of others, for consideration by the jury of world-leading figures in the field.
The annual prize submission deadline is October 31.
2026: MMP awarded to SpiNNaker Ecosystem teams. MECA awarded to Mohamadreza Zolfagharinejad.
2024: award year advanced to current year (2025)
2022: MMP awarded to Nitish Thakor and team at Johns Hopkins University. MECA awarded to Chang Gao.
2021: MMP awarded to two teams of researchers: Edmund Lalor and team; Silvestro Micera and team
2020: MMP awarded to Shih-Chii Liu and team, University of Zurich and ETH Zurich, Lifetime Contribution to Neuromorphic Engineering to Karlheinz Meier.
2019: MMP awarded to Greg Cohen and team, Western Sydney University
2018: No award
2017: MMP awarded to Davide Scaramuzza and team, University of Zurich
2016: MMP awarded to Dharmendra Modha and team, IBM Research – Almaden
